Personal Automobile Insurance
What kind of automobile insurance do you need?
There are three basic types of auto insurance: liability, collision, and comprehensive. You are required by law to have liability coverage for your auto. However, you may want the additional coverage of collision or comprehensive insurance.
Liability Insurance provides for one's legal responsibility to pay for damages due to an accident or loss. Liability coverage for auto insurance is required in all states. In California, you are required to have liability coverage of at least 15/30/5. The first two numbers refer to bodily injury liability limits per injured person and per accident, respectively. The third number refers to the property damage liability limit per accident.
Example: You are involved in an auto accident. The police officer determines that you are at fault for the accident. Your auto liability insurance will pay for the other party's medical expenses and auto repairs.
Collision Insurance provides for the repair or replacement of your auto after an accident or collision. In the previous example, the repairs to your auto would be covered by your own collision insurance.
Comprehensive Insurance provides for the losses to an insured's car due to fire, theft, or other losses that are not the result of a collision.
Example: A rock hits your car while you are driving on the freeway and cracks your windshield. Your comprehensive insurance will pay for the repair after the deductible is met.
